There have been a number of identifiable, new trends in the realm of greeting cards recently.  It can be helpful for greeting card artists as well as consumers of these products to have a better understanding of some of the more important trends that are emerging in the greeting card industry today.

As with so many other commercial sectors in the 21st century, even greeting cards are becoming more high-tech.  A growing number of greeting cards today actually are coming complete with computer chips and other gadgetry.  These innovations are turning greeting cards into something more akin to a presentation than anything else.

On the list of high-tech developments that is impacting the entire greeting card industry is the rise of greeting cards that are conveyed over the Internet.  Electronic greeting cards of this nature continue to gain in number each year.  However, industry analysts have noted that the increase in electronic greeting card usage has not caused a decrease in brick and mortar world, traditional greeting card sales.  In fact, the sales of traditional real world greeting cards has been on an upswing in recent years.

Another trend in greeting cards is reflected in the way many consumers are now living their lives.  Beginning in the 1980s and carrying through into the early parts of the 21st century, many consumers were doing what was called “cocooning.”  These people were directing their attention and energies inward towards their homes and families.  As a consequence, there was a strong resurgence in greeting cards that were crafted along familial themes.

Naturally, these types of greeting card continue to be an important segment of the overall market.  However, at this point in time, more and more people are again returning to more active social lives outside of the home.  Therefore, one obvious trend at the present time is the expansion of options when it comes to greeting cards designed for friends and for other non-family relationships and circumstances.

Finally, many people are expressing a willingness to spend more money on individual greeting cards.  In this regard, they are willing to pay more for designer and original greeting cards than historically has been the case.
